Malana Chandrakhani Pass Trek

Chandrakhani Pass is one of the most fascinating trek in Kullu Valley. Viewing this enchanting beauty of the nature route passes through the dense forest with variety of botanical species & colourful foliage. Picture perfect and phenomenal scene would be an eye shot. Deotibba Peak, Pirpranjal & Parvati ranges are some of the captivating mountain ranges, a natural beauty which cannot be missed.  Malana village has adhered the traditional heritage & culture of the place which can be seen while passing the route.

Rucksack, cotton clothes, good trekking shoes, a warm jacket,warmer, woollen or monkey cap covering head and ears, UV rays protected sunglasses, raincoat, extra socks, water bottle, torch, cold cream, sunscreen, toilet soap, towel, walking Stick and medicines that you usually use.

 

How to Reach Manali

Distance by road:-

Manali is well connected to Delhi. Take an overnight bus from Delhi and you will reach Manali in 12 ‐ 14 hours(approx 540 KMS). Tickets can be booked online at www.redbus.in or www.hrtc.gov.in Tip : Since Delhi Manali is a long journey most Volvo private buses leave Delhi between 5 pm and 6 pm. The last govt bus leaves at 8.30 pm from ISBT Kashmere Gate. Volvo buses charge between Rs.1,000 to 1,400 per sector from Delhi to Manali and vice versa. Manali to Delhi: Like the onward journey, buses leave from Manali to Delhi between 4 and 5 p.m. Your tentative arrival at Delhi may be anywhere between 6 a.m and 10 a.m. Plan your onward journeys only post noon giving enough buffer for bus delay.

How to reach Naggar:

From Manali, Naggar is 18 km. far and there are multiple buses running in every 15 minutes or one can get off at Patlikuhal which is 5 km. far from Naggar on the right bank highway. Patlikuhal lies in between of Kullu Manali. You can club a taxi or travel by a local transport from Manali or Patlikuhal to approach Naggar.

 

Nearest Railway Station:-

Nearest Railway station is Ambala (350 kms) and Chandigarh (310 kms). Tip: Regular Volvo and Buses are available from Chandigarh to Manali in the evening. Volvo buses charge between Rs.800 to Rs.1,200 per sector from Chandigarh to Manali and vice versa.

Nearest Airport :-

Nearest Airport is Bhuntar is 60 Kms. ​Bhuntar, which is 52 km away from Manali, is the nearest airport. Taxi services are available from Bhuntar to Manali, which costs about Rs.1000‐ Rs.2,000. Bhuntar is well connected to Delhi by air. The airliners that take you to this Airport are Indian Airlines, Kingfisher airlines, MDLR Airlines and Jagson Airlines, operating flights from Delhi and Chandigarh to Kullu.

Itinerary

Trek Line up:

Day 1:  Reporting Manali.(2050m)

Day 2:  Manali/ Naggar to Naya Tapru (2900m) 6 hrs Approx 10-11 kms.

Day 3:  Naya Tapru  – Chanderkhani Pass (3660m/12000ft) – Malana (2650m) 9-10 hrs Approx 12–13 kms.

Day 4: Malana – Malana Dam/Jari (Approx 3–4 kms) – Naggar (1800m)    

 

Detailed Itinerary:

Day 1:  Report at Naggar.(1800m)

Reporting – Acclimatization – Orientation & Briefing of the trek – Trek Preparation & window shopping

(Sufficient time would be given for visiting market and nearby places)

Day 2:  Manali/ Naggar to Naya Tapru (2900m/9500ft) 6 hrs Approx 10-11 kms.

We will start our trek from Naggar after breakfast. We will pass through number of famous temples initially on the trek. After crossing Rumsu village the surrounding will suddenly change. We will be passing through the thick jungle of Pine, Walnut, Golden, Oak and wild Cherry. After almost 6 hrs of walk we will be at our first camp site, Naya Tapru. Naya Tapru is a flat area full of grasslands and surrounded by tall Oak, Horse chestnut and Walnut trees.

Day 3:  Naya Tapru  – Chanderkhani Pass (3660m/12000ft) – Malana (2650m) 9-10 hrs Approx 12–13 kms.

Today trek is mix of gradual walk and hard ascend. It is a very scenic route hiking through the alpine vegetation which will become shorter and vanish into miniature plant life. You will encounter many new birds and new herbs for which Chanderkhani is famous. If you have a good luck with than you may also see some wild life.  A beautiful trail leads to pass through rhododendron shrubs and offers splendid views of Dhauladhar range, Parvati valley and Malana valley. On the top of Chandrakhani Pass one can have a striking view of Deo Tibba overlooking the Malana and snow crowned giants on the Spiti border. We will take a descent down to Malana which is steep and tiring. We will reach Malana by the evening. Visit and explore local life and the traditional houses. Overnight camp/Guest house at Malana

Day 4: Malana – Malana Dam/Jari (Approx 3–4 kms) – Naggar (1800m)    

A descent to Malana river, we cross a bridge and walk through Malana village to enter in Parvati valley. An easy descent until we reach at the Malana Dam. After Malana Dam we will get our cab to Naggar. As reached Naggar, take your belongings and check out.

The Malana Chanderkhani Pass trek can be done in most of the season. Every season has its different charm of landscape atmosphere and tranquility. This trek done in summer offers green foliage festooning the vast meadows yet trek done in winters bring lot of snow overlapping the whole valley with white blanket. But in winters crossing over the pass is inaccessible. It depends on the person when or which season he/she likes the most.
Malana Chanderkhani Pass is a moderate challenging trek; it doesn’t need any prior experience but good physical fitness. You have to climb a pass heightening 3600m. And descend till the mysterious village Malana. For this trek one should do regular exercises leave smoking if you do a month before the trek date. Being physically sound will help negotiate this wonderful trek.
The weather in the mountain is mostly unpredictable. In this trek weather is ideal and depends on the season you are trekking. The weather is bearable and not that harsh conditions are faced. The temperature will be 15-20 degrees in daytime at nights it will drop around 0 degrees. In winters this temperature levels may vary and it will drop down as much to -8 degrees.
For every trek you should have done precise packing of things needed later on the trek. Incorrect things of packing would make you suffer during the trek with unnecessary load and hardship. So here are some of the prerequisite things to be considered as one’s requirements. Backpack(40ltrs), Down feather jacket(1), Fleece uppers(2), woolen sweater (1), Dry fit shirts(2), dry fit trousers(2), warm lower(1), thermals(1), woolen socks(1pair), socks(2pairs), balaclava(1), gloves (1pair), Ponchu(1), waterproof Bag cover, Underwear(2), Sunglasses UV protected, trekking pole.
The shoes with high ankle support and with good gripping sole could be the best option for the trek. Always remind to buy shoes few days’ earlier beginning of a trek. Because using it earlier will make shoes fit to your feet, though you won’t get blisters or sores on your foot while on the trek.
Vegetarian food with egg is served during the trek. Vegetarian food is good to digest at heights and is nutritious. You will have healthy breakfast, lunch, evening tea snacks, soup and dinner.
Yes you have to carry a lunch box so you can have packed lunch and a steel mug to drink soups and tea.
Any Himalayan trek en route is full with natural water sources. One can drink directly from these streams, torrents or can ask about from where to fill drinking water to our guides. If you are uncertain about the water, you can carry chlorine tablets along with you. But we recommend you to consume water flowing clean from the mighty glaciers.
We have tents of different capacity, 3men 4men tents. We will accommodate you with sufficient space and vestibule as per the requirements of the group. There will be 2 persons in a 3men tent and 3 persons in a 4 men tent.
There will be toilets at each camp, which will be portable eco - friendly toilets with deep pit dug inside to do your business and a heap of soil along to the pit to cover the waste. Remember not to use wet wipes, these are non degradable products. Always use tissue papers or water if available.
One has to carry about 10-15 kg’s of weight. It may differ as per ones requirements.
If you don’t want to carry your backpack you can relieve your sack to a porter or a mule. For off loading your backpack you have to tell us 10 days before the trek. We will arrange accordingly a porter/mule which will cost 1000/- each day with the backpack weight not exceeding 12 kg.
We will trek 5-6 km each day, which will take 3-4 hour of trekking. We will reach our campsite by the afternoon.
Our professional certified guide/instructors will lead the group who are mostly inhabitants. They have enough experience to deal any circumstance occurred while trekking. Our team will be along all the time escorting the group until the trek is accomplished.
In any case of any emergency our staff is skilled and trained for such situations held at high altitude. Our team has a wealth of experience dealing with high altitude sicknesses and urgent situations. We carry first aid kit and oxygen cylinders with us and in any emergency we rescue the trekker till the road head. After reaching road any additional cost of evacuation is borne by the trekker. All and all it is trekker’s responsibility to get a certified medical fitness document before coming for the trek, which certifies that the trekker is fit for the trek.
Sure you can customize the group with your own opted dates and group size. The cost will depend on the no. of participants taking part for this trek.
Yes we have down feather jackets, trekking shoes Gloves etc. if someone wants to rent a thing he/she can ask our officials.
Absolutely yes, we had organized and managed groups successfully mixed of men and women from years. We ensure the safety and the integrity of the female trekkers utmost. We provide female participants tents only sharing with other female. If there is a single girl trekking, then we provide her a personal tent. After all the mountains is safer place then traveling through the city.
The network on this trek is inconsistent. So don’t rely on poor reception and make all your urgent calls before heading for the trek.
Consuming alcohol dehydrates your body and makes you prone to illness or odd situation. So avoid consuming alcohol/smoking during the trek.
