Saurkundi Lake Trek

Saurkundi lake trek is a spectacular trek with mind blowing scenic beauties. It is very popular amongst nature lovers and Neophytes. Saurkundi Lake is located in Kullu valley in between trail to the Kalihani Pass and Bara Bhangal trek. Saurkundi lake trek is also called as Rani Sui lake trek. Saurkundi comprises of two words one is ‘Saur’ which means’ Lake’ and the other is ‘Kundi’ which means ‘A Frying Pan’. So the word Saurkundi means “a lake in the shape of frying pan”. The lake is dedicated to 'Maharishi Shandilya'. Every year thousands of people come visit this divine magical place to take a holy dip in the sacred water.

The Saurkundi lake trek has numerous routes but we take route from the Shangcher village, 30km. far from the base at Naggar. First we drive to Patlikuhal, then turn right and continue following road passing some beautiful villages at high hills offering a great landscape till Shangcher village. The route will commence from the village starting with steep incline between the village houses. Trail will zigzag in between the hike amongst bushes and shrubs to the forests of cedar and wild flora and fauna. The campsite at Thoti wouldn’t take so long to approach instead being healthy acclimatization mountain walk. Thoti is surrounded by the Cedar trees and in front is the mesmerizing view of the valley below with river Beas flowing serenely. The forests in further trail are dense and will follow till the mountain opens up to vast meadows. Climb to the Maili Thach comes with slant meadows of wild flowers. Maili Thach is located at a decent height, so that the vista around is mesmerizing. The evening and the morning lights paint the landscape full with colours. Going forward to the lake brings out the best of this trek. Vast mountain meadows, towering peaks surrounding the trail captivates one amidst the real Himalayan Nature. En route one will encounter huge boulders and rocks, on this moraine patch there are some huge carved round stone, said to be set at this height by the “Pandavas” for building a wind mill. The boulders are so huge that it reminds of the pre historic times as we pass by. The steep gradient continues till the meadows become gentler and following the trail will lead us to the Lake. From above one will see the shape and the location of the lake as if it is named Saurkundi. The lake might be little in size but offers serene landscape. The lake is sacred, so there shouldn’t be any kind of litter and noise or shout. After having a good time, return back to the Maili Thach via same route. As approached the camp have a cup of tea watching beautiful sunset aside the campfire. Following morning trek back to Shangcher village taking same route, where our vehicle would be waiting for us. Drive back to the base camp, depart to your destinations.

The boulders and rocks here are so huge that reminds of a prehistoric time. At this moraine point is the most interesting round stone said to be carved and brought up by the ‘Pandavas’ to build a wind mill.
