Hanuman Tibba

Hanuman tibba is a wonderful pyramid peak rising at 5940m, located at Beas Kund glacier in Dhauladhar Range, in the North of Manali above Solang valley.  It is famous among climbers and adventure seekers. The peak demands fair amount of endurance and stamina to conquer it. The importance and the popularity of the peak could be understood with fact that the Western Himalayan mountaineering institute at Manali, used to take its participants of advance course to this summit. This peak is more clear when you travel to Rohtang pass. It is not the highest peak in Manali region but as other peak it gives suitable peak climbing experience.

For Hanuman tibba expedition we set off our  trek from Solang valley. Reach dhundi through deodar oak birch trees by taxi. From dhundi to bakar thach between beautiful meadows to  Beas Kund lake in couple of hours. A tiny lake which is the source of the river Beas is holy to the locals and is known  as Beas kund. Beas kund to tentu gully is 2-3 hours trek . We set up base camp below tentu gully to shorten the distance towards gully and set up our base camp for upcoming days. On the next day load ferry over tentu gully. After load ferry we cross Tentu la pass and establish advance base camp. It takes 4-5 hours to cross the tentu pass. The gully is ultimate test for the climbers. The trek is steep and slippry at the top of the gully. After crossing the tentu pass we walk half an hour and reach near to a small lake, fix our camp for overnight stay.  The campsite is surrounded by the rocky mountains, so the rock falls are randomly noticed and heard even when you are asleep. The place is safe because the camp is at ideal distance from the cliffs. Next morning climb on morains and glaciers for almost a day will testify the spirits of the climbers. We try to go as near to the peak to set up summit base camp below the Hanuman Tibba. One can see the Peak clearly and find the safe route to the summit while having a cup of tea and snacks below.Next day early in the morning probably in the dark we attempt to the summit. The peak is  climbed via South - West face.  The view up at the summit is out of this world. The peak is surrounded by many snow covered peaks like Deo tibba, Inderkila and other lesser elevated peaks. A little of technical ability but the stamina requires to climb this summit. After summit head back to summit camp. In the morning descend back to the base camp. Take a rest for one day and next day trek back to Dhundi. Back to Solang Valley, drive to manali.

Reporting – Orientation & Briefing of the trek – Trek Preparation & window shopping

(Sufficient time would be given for visiting market and nearby places).

Day 2: Manali to Bakkar Thach.

From Solang Valley our trek will start to Bakkar Thach. Enroute we will be crossing the Dhundi Village, the Last village in Solang Valley, a place where Beas river meets it’s first tributary cominig from Beas kund and Rohtang Pass. The last place to stock up with a few essentials before heading to the mountains. Metal road ends here. After Dhundi our trek starts from the coniferous tree – line to the high altitude pasture. Rhododendron shrubs are abundant and River Beas is crossed over a snow bridge. Night halt at Bakkar Thach.

 Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner

Day 3: Bakkar Thach to Beas Kund Glacier. (3600m/11800ft)

After breakfast, we’ll continue on our way up the Beas Kund Glacier. A short but steep climb takes  you to a 300m long moraine field, that culminates in the meadows of the Beas Kund region. A vast flatland, strewn with small boulders and streams, crowned by huge mountain faces and hanging glaciers, the topography of the region is in stark contrast to the prior days. Our campsite will be situated several kilometers away from Beas Kund, at the base of Tentu Pass.

 Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Dinner

DAY 4: Rest day at base camp.

Today will be a complete rest day. We’ll spend the day at base camp eating, drinking and sleeping and adjusting to the altitude. The tasks for the day will include technical gear distribution, crampon fitting, and a general meeting on how we’ll proceed over the coming days.

 Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Dinner

DAY 5: Base Camp to Advanced Camp (4000m/13120ft) below Tentu pass

Today porter team will load ferry and other team members will do ice climbing practice on glacier. Full day training in glacier.

 Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Dinner

Day 06: Advanced Camp to Camp 1 (4800m/15740ft) over Tentu pass.

Early this morning we take our first steps up the mountain. Almost immediately we will be walking up a steep slope of hardened snow. We’ll arrive at camp, which is half way up the mountain side in time to have our packed lunch. Now that we are on the mountain, we’ll be without our kitchen staff. From here on, all the members of the expedition (guests, high-altitude Friends (HAF), guide, etc.) will work together to carry loads, pitch and remove camp, cook and wash. From tonight onwards, we’ll be camping on snow for the next few days.

 Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner

Day 07: Camp 1 to Summit Camp (5000m/16400ft).

This will probably be the most challenging day of the entire expedition. The climb to the top of Tentu Pass today is steep, long and arduous. Depending on the snow conditions, your guides will set up fixed ropes for you. Once we come to the pass, we’ll have a fantastic view of ‘the other side’ for the first time. From the ridge, it’s a short gradual descent to our camp site.

 Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner

Day 08: Summit Attempt. (5932m/19460ft)

We have a relatively flat walk ahead of us today; our height gain will be barely 200m. But the hike today is quite long, almost 7 hours, constantly over a glacier, circumnavigating some crevasses. After arriving at camp, we’ll quickly have a very early dinner and crawl into our tents. Later this night, we’ll be making our summit attempt.

 Meals. Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner

Day 09: Reserve day for Summit.

We’ll wake up just after midnight today. After a quick hot chai, we’ll head up the mountain in an attempt to reach the summit. Although the gradient is not as much as on the way up Tentu Pass, you will be fatigued after your climb from the previous days. From the summit, you’ll have a 360 degree panaromic view of the peaks of the Dhauladar, Pir Panjal and Greater Himalayan Ranges. After a quick photo session, we’ll head down from the summit. We’ll stop at summit camp for some refreshments, break camp and head back to Camp 1 for a well-earned night’s sleep.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 10: Rest at Camp 1.

Today will be a day of complete rest. Spend the day at camp taking in the views, eating, sleeping and eating some more. This day is also reserved as a buffer day, in case the first summit attempt is called off because of bad weather.

 Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 11: Camp 1 to Base Camp.

Today morning we’ll start the long haul down Tentu Pass towards base camp. We still need to watch our step in the gully, but afterwards, it’ll be a pleasant slide downhill. On arriving at camp, we’ll be welcomed by our base camp staff, and a hearty, well deserved feast!

 Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 12: Base camp to Manali

After a lazy breakfast this morning, we’ll head down to Dhundi, where a vehicle will be waiting to take us back to  hotels. Enjoy your first hot shower of the expedition and get dressed up for the big party in the evening.

Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner party.

Day 13: Checkout after breakfast.
